Some products can weigh down your hair but gel is perfectly ok to use if you wash it all out before you go to bed, although if you are allergic to anything inside the gel it could irritate your scalp.

It can be harmful. Most of them have alcohol in them. That dries the hair and makes it brittle - therefore easy to break. May sure you wash it all out with a shampoo that provides moisture.

Is using hair gel harmful for hair?

Yes and no. If you use too much too often and don't wash it out is can do damage to your hair and make your ends get split. When this happens your hair can shed and fall out. On the other hand, if you use it, but wash it out often then it will keep your hair from getting damaged.

It also depends on the texture of your hair. The finer your hair is the more likely it is to be damaged by consistent use of gel products.
