If you use water and you have natural wavy or curly hair it will unstraighten it and you'll have to straighten it again not sure about gel though

You may use water, I think it's actually better because then the iron won't fry your hair and the water prevents your hair from losing too much moisture. As for gel, I don't think you should use it because I think your hair would look unnatural since it's going to be so hard lol. If you're worried about flyaways after you straighten your hair, you can use some regular conditioner that you use in the shower. Squeeze out a drop maybe the size of a dime then smooth it into your hair, concentrating on the top layer of your hair before you straighten.

You did not say what kind of straightener - chemical or heat. YOu can't use either with a heat straightener unless you blowdry - hair must be dry.

I would suggest Avocado oil products, oil of Beaumont, aloe Vera oils, carrot oil, olive oil mixture, or some named product such as Perm repair, or Alberta VO5 hair dressings, these can be bought over the counter in the hair product area. These products will condition, moisturize and keep the hair soft and manageable.
